The Chair called the meeting to order at 3:00 pm.

    That the minutes of regular meeting of the Board of Police Commissioners held on January 28, 2021 be adopted.

Chief Cooper verbally reported on the following:

  • COVID-19 - so far this year officers have attended 121 calls for service relating to violations or suspected violations of public health orders and have issued four tickets. 
  • Approximately the same number of calls for service as the previous year but significantly different types of calls and responses. 
  • National trend towards an increase in the risk of overdose and overdose deaths.
  • Recovery of police service dog recently injured in stabbing incident.

Commissioner Clark acknowledged the recent Federal government announcement introducing a new bill related to overdose strategy.

Commissioner Healy discussed the significance of cooperation and compassion as acknowledged in a recent Toronto report regarding a community plan for reduction of violence. Also noted by Commissioner Healy was the recent announcement that Muskeg Lake First Nation will be taking over the management of its child and family services.

Commissioner Greyeyes acknowledged the hard work the leadership of Muskeg Lake First Nation has done to ensure children are brought home to be raised by family and community.

Membership information from CAPG was provided and the fee for 2021 of $5,000.00 was noted.

    That the Canadian Association of Police Governance membership be renewed in the amount of $5,000.00.

A report dated February 9, 2021 was provided.

Inspector Darren Pringle provided a PowerPoint and together with Chief Cooper answered questions of the Board.

Discussion followed regarding the role and training of the Alternative Response Officers and a future evaluation of the pilot project.
