The Chair called the meeting to order on Treaty 6 Territory and the Traditional Homeland of the Métis People and confirmed roll call.

Chair Greyeyes provided a brief update on the Police Chief recruitment. The Chief of Police Job Profile was issued on February 4, 2024. The closing date for applications is March 4, 2024.

Interim Chief Haye spoke to the following:

  • Attended Champion of Change Awards Gala hosted by People Bridge Advocacy – January 27, 2024;
  • Deputy Chief McBride attended the Saskatoon Riversdale Chinese New Year’s Dinner - February 9, 2024;
  • Deputy Chief McBride attended Saskatchewan’s Afrocentric Symposium for 2024 Black History Month – February 10, 2024;
  • In 2023, SPS seized 17 firearms, $32,000 in cash, 237 grams of cocaine during one investigation. In another investigation SPS seized over 6 kilos of cocaine, over $270,000 in cash, three vehicles and many luxury items.
  • In the 3 years prior to 2023, SPS seized over $365,000 in cash and 556 firearms as a result of arrests associated to crime. The illicit firearms are sent for destruction and the cash and physical assets are turned over to provincial civil forfeiture or federal seized property management. SPS does not receive any money or funding through these seizures.
  • SPS is providing virtual recruitment information sessions periodically throughout the year. More information can be found at join.saskatoonpolice.ca; and
  • 2024 Police Academy is now accepting applications.

Interim Chief Haye responded to questions of the Board.

A letter from Dean Dodge, President, Saskatoon Search and Rescue, dated January 28, 2024 was provided.

Interim Chief Haye introduced the item and Executive Director Arscott presented the report with a PowerPoint.

A report of the Interim Chief of Police was provided.

Interim Chief Haye introduced the item and Superintendent Pringle presented the report.  They responded to questions of the Board. 

Discussion ensued regarding the current process and possibility of future information sharing between SPS and the City of Saskatoon Transportation Department. SPS Solicitor Smith and Board Solicitor Edmondson responded to questions of the Board.

SPS Administration left the meeting at 3:50 p.m. with the exception of Interim Chief Haye.

Interim Chief Haye and Board Solicitor Edmondson left the meeting at 4:21 p.m.

The Board completed its In Camera session at 4:45 p.m. and reconvened publicly to rise and report, as follows:
